Blaze destroys residence

Owner is treated for smoke inhalation

SLIPPERY ROCK TWP, Lawrence County — A fire Sunday afternoon destroyed a mobile home on Fox Road.

Chief George Johnson of the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department said the double-wide trailer at 882 Fox Road was a total loss.

He said homeowner Heidi Michaels was treated for smoke inhalation.

She and her husband, Wade Michaels, also lost their Jack Russell Terrier.

Johnson said Wade Michaels was burning trash outside, but went back indoors.

“He thought it was out,” Johnson said.

The chief said the fire ignited the field, which then spread to the home after 3 p.m.

“Soon as he noticed smoke, that’s when he called 911,” Johnson said about Wade Michaels.

The American Red Cross is assisting the couple, who are not insured, with lodging.

Johnson said people need to be careful when burning outside.

“Use extreme caution,” he said.

Thirty-five firefighters responded to the call.

The Prospect, Portersville, Shenango Township, Hickory Township, Scott Township and Volant volunteer fire departments assisted Slippery Rock.
