Man released from prison spends night in hotel, charged with stealing key
A man recently released from prison was accused by police of stealing a key card from a Butler Township hotel and spending the night there for free.
In a series of incidents last weekend, Michael “Myka” Petrie, 39, was charged with felony criminal trespass and two counts of misdemeanor theft and placed back in Butler County Prison.
Petrie had been charged July 18 with vehicle theft, after driving a vehicle off the lot of a Sarver car dealership.
He waived his preliminary hearing July 26 and was released from prison on an unsecured bond of $20,000.
On Saturday, July 29, police said Petrie tried to make a fraudulent return at Walmart. Police said Petrie removed a car seat worth $296 from a store shelf and took it to customer service to return it. He was denied the return and later charged with misdemeanor theft.
That same night, police said Petrie went to the Comfort Inn on Pittsburgh Road and attempted to rent a room. Documents showed Petrie could not pay for the room.
Police said Petrie later obtained an active key card from the hotel’s front desk and spent the night in a room.
On July 30, Petrie requested access to another room by telling the clerk he wanted to extend his stay at the hotel. He was given a key card for a separate room before management realized the discrepancy, police said.
Documents showed Petrie did not pay for his stay in the hotel, which was valued at $278.
Petrie’s preliminary hearing is scheduled Aug. 3 before District Judge Kevin O’Donnell.
