Another fall semester of college means an increased presence from state police’s Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement in college towns.

The bureau said it will be teaming up with local and state police to target alcohol-related crimes, which could result in fines up to $500 and 90 days in jail for the first offense. Subsequent underage drinking violations can result in an increased fine of $1,000.

The bureau will also meet with liquor licensees surrounding colleges and universities to advocate for preventing the sale of alcohol to minors and other liquor violations.

Anyone over 21 caught furnishing alcohol to minors, including parents, may face a third-degree misdemeanor charge with a fine of up to $1,000 per minor and up to a year in jail. Subsequent violations increase to a $2,500 fine.
