Voelker

Steven Voelker, 46, of Texas, formerly of Butler, died April 11.

He was born July 1, 1961, the son of (Martha) Louise Altenhof Hursh of Arizona and the late Harold "Bo" Voelker.

When he was 11, he was critically injured in a sledding accident on Feb. 11, 1973, and lived the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

He attended Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis and was awarded the Outstanding Disabled Senior Scholarship by the Rotary Club when he graduated in 1980.

In 1987, he graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a business degree. He worked for American Airlines as a crew scheduler for 14 years. He was able to travel extensively to Sweden, Australia, Europe, Mexico, Hawaii and Spain.

Over the years, he had 40 surgeries to correct complications of paraplegia. Steven was unable to work for the past three years. His dream was to have stem cell therapy but he did not live long enough.

Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Neal Hursh, of Arizona; two sisters, Brenda Page and Julie Knops; two nieces; and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, John.
