Slippery Rock University employee killed in fatal crash in Venango Township

A 36-year-old woman died and three others — including a 3-year-old boy — were taken to area hospitals following a head-on crash Thursday, Aug. 27, in Venango Township.

Amanda E. Montgomery, 36, who worked at Slippery Rock University, was killed when the GMC Acadia, in which she was a passenger, crossed into the opposite lane of travel and collided with a Ford F-150XLT just before 4 p.m. in the area of 318 Eau Claire Road.

Montgomery had worked at Bailey Library on campus as part of the facilities team since November 2024.

“Amanda was a valued member of our community and our thoughts are with her family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” Ken Bach, SRU’s executive director of university communications and marketing, said.

Additional resources are available for staff who may need support through the State Employee Assistance Program. Students seeking support may reach out to the SRU Counseling Center or Dean of Students Karla Fonner, Bach said.

Montgomery attended Moniteau Jr./Sr. High School, according to her Facebook profile.

The Acadia was driven by a 17-year-old girl from Boyers, who was flown by AHN LifeFlight to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh with injuries of unknown severity.

Rebecca L. Rodgers, 50, of Slippery Rock, was driving the Ford, police said. She and a 3-year-old boy passenger were transported to AHN Grove City with injuries of unknown severity.

A crash report noted Montgomery was not wearing a seat belt during the crash.

State police were assisted by Superior Ambulance Service, Emlenton Area Ambulance Service, AHN Critical Care Unit 956, AHN LifeFlight, Eau Claire Volunteer Fire Department and the Emlenton Fire Department. The Butler County Coroner’s Office also responded.

The crash is still under investigation.
