Butler man gets lengthy prison sentence for burglary, thefts
A Butler man was sentenced Thursday to serve 5 to 10 years in state prison for a burglary and a string of thefts in 2019, along with a drunk driving incident from this year.
Delmar Edward Silk, 63, was given the sentence in Common Pleas Court by Judge Kelley Streib after he plead guilty to charges in six cases in a plea agreement. The terms in each case are concurrent. He was given credit for time already served.
Silk was sentenced to serve 60 to 120 months after pleading guilty to a felony charge of burglary filed by state police following an Aug. 21, 2019, burglary at a home along Golden Lane in Connoquenessing Township.
He entered an unlocked front door around 2 a.m. and took a purse that the victim said contained a gold watch, a car key, a driver's license and three credit cards, with a total reported value of $75,000. Streib ordered Silk not to have contact with the victim.
Silk was also sentenced to serve 21 to 60 months in prison after pleading guilty to a felony charge of receiving stolen property. State police filed that charge after finding him asleep in a stolen car with the stolen purse late in the morning of Aug. 21. That sentence included paying $5,045.63 in restitution to State Farm Insurance and a $500 fine.
In another case, he was sentenced to serve 21 to 60 months in prison and pay restitution totaling $407.90 after pleading guilty to a felony charge of theft by unlawful taking. The case was filed by Butler City police following an Aug. 15, 2019, incident in which he stole a GMC box truck from Steinmiller Woodworking on East Jefferson Street.
In a fourth case, Silk was sentenced to serve another 21-60-month prison term and $5,570.40 in restitution to State Farm Insurance and $500 in restitution. He pleaded guilty to a felony count of theft filed by city police following a Feb. 23, 2019, incident. Silk stole an unlocked 2010 Hyundai Elantra parked at North Main and New Castle streets while the owner was dining in a restaurant.
In a fifth case, he was sentenced to serve six to 24 months in prison after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of theft from a motor vehicle. The case was filed by city police following an Aug. 19, 2019, incident.
In the sixth case, Silk was to serve five days to six months in prison and pay fines totaling $800 after pleading guilty to charges of driving under the influence and retail theft. The case was filed by Butler Township police following a Jan. 7, 2022, incident.
