Three Butler Senior High School students earned a spot in Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) state ensembles.

Band students Nathan Gallagher (trumpet), Hunter Karenbauer (percussion), and Cade Weaver (trumpet) all earned a spot in the PMEA state ensembles.

Hunter and Cade were selected for All State Wind Ensemble, and Nathan was chosen for All State Concert Band.

GROVE CITY — An alumnus and three current Grove City College students recently won the short film category for the second annual Veritas Film Festival, hosted by Veritas Arts and the college.Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the festival planned for April at the Guthrie Theater and on campus was called off. But Spencer Folmar, organizer of the festival and owner of the Guthrie, and the festival's seven judges, including Kimberly Miller of the college's department of communication and visual arts, watched more than 700 entries and chose winners from the 150 selections for each of the seven categories.Robbie Weaver won the top prize in the short film category for his film “Treebeard Brown,” highlighting a local band that includes a few GCC alums.Current Grove City College students Addie Reynolds, Catie Fluharty and Adam Sweet worked with Weaver on the seven-minute short film, which was originally released last year.

JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley High School Math League team placed first in the region and 16th out of 34 high schools in the state.Individually, junior David Choi tied for 18th place in the state with a cumulative score of 27 out of 30 over the six tests.Rachel Spear, sophomore, tied for 24th place in the state with a score of 26 out of 30.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Twelve entries from Slippery Rock University's Communication and Public Affairs division earned recognition in the 2019 Collegiate Advertising Awards.The Collegiate Advertising Awards program is a national program that honors marketing professionals for excellence in all forms of advertising, marketing and promotion specific to higher education products and services.

BLOOMSBURG — Bloomsburg University honored Hannah White as one of 147 Bloomsburg University Scholar-Athletes for 2019-20.White, from Cranberry Township, a member of the volleyball team, was one of those recognized for the academic achievement.The student-athletes honored achieved a grade-point average of 3.25 or higher over the past two semesters and/or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher and were at least a sophomore academically.

Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership.
