Lyon roars with 4-homer day

The numbers would make any fantasy baseball league owner drool: Four home runs, a double, seven RBI.

All in the same game.

Such production is indeed a fantasy for almost any Little League player. But Jace Lyon made it a reality for himself.

Lyon, 12, a sixth-grader at Meridian Elementary School, had four homers, a double and drove in seven runs as the leadoff batter for the Butler Cubs ASA team in a recent 16-14 victory over Cicco's Tailors in the Butler Township Baseball Association.

The game was played at Adelman Field.

"I never had more than one home run in a game before," Lyon said. "I doubt I'll do anything like this again.

"It was just one of those nights, I guess. I hit everything hard."

Lyon hit a liner over the third baseman's head in his first at-bat. The ball died deep in the left field corner and by the time the fielders got it back in, Lyon had circled the bases for an inside-the-park home run.

His second at-bat resulted in a home run over the fence in left-center field. His third at-bat was a run-scoring double to the gap in left-center.

Lyon homered over the fence in center field during his fourth at-bat. He homered to right-center in his final at-bat.

"I was a little surprised they pitched to me during that last at-bat," Lyon admitted.

The three out-of-the-park home runs came against three different pitchers.

"Jace has the size and he's developed a swing with enough power to hit the ball out of the park," his father, Jim Lyon, said. "Three home runs (over the fence) in one game, though, is just phenomenal. That's once-in-a-lifetime stuff."

Two of the homers were solo shots with the other two coming with a runner on base.

Lyon stands at an even 5-feet and weighs 90 pounds. He's been attending baseball camps and has been a member of Nothing but Baseball, former Butler High School baseball coach Jay Fennell's facility off Route 356, for a few years.

"Jace has worked hard at his training over the years," his father said. "He's developed a good, fast swing and a solid follow-through."

Lyon has been one of his son's coaches over the years, a growing list that includes Chris Hinchberger, Kevin Lewis, Jake Friel, Robert Swartwout, Rod Dunkle, John McLaughlin and current coach Ron Double.

Jace Lyon began playing team baseball at age 5 in the Butler YMCA T-Ball program and was a member of the undefeated Meridian Marauders while participating in the Meridian Baseball Association's Farm League.

He was also a member of Butler Township's sanctioned Little League team that won the District 25 title in 2003.

During baseball's off-season, Lyon has been point guard for one of Butler's traveling basketball teams. He is also an avid fisherman.

He plays shortstop for his current Little League team.

"I'm hoping to play for the Butler High School team some day," Lyon said. "That's all I'm shooting for right now."

"If he continues to improve, he has a chance to play at that level," his father agreed.
