School board chief honored
JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley School Board president was recognized during Monday night's meeting for his work as a volunteer.
Jim Nickel was named Volunteer of the Year by Junior Achievement of Western Pennsylvania, and Tracy Vitale, superintendent of schools, wanted to make sure he got due credit among his peers.
“I know that Mr. Nickel, you did not want to be recognized tonight, but I refused to take it off the agenda,” she said. “The amount of hours you volunteer to be here twice a month, usually it's three or four times a month …. Most of our taxpayers have no idea.”
In addition to being on the school board, Nickel volunteers to teach Junior Achievement classes, participates in mission trips and volunteers for committees, Vitale said.
Nickel teaches personal finance to secondary students at Seneca Valley. Junior Achievement of Western Pennsylvania is a volunteer-delivered K-12 program that fosters workforce development, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills. The program serves more than 67,000 students in 371 schools in Western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia.
“One of the things I'm passionate about is financial literacy,” he said. “I'm looking forward to teaching it again here at Seneca Valley.”
