Seven Fields man accused of dealing drugs that killed another
A Seven Fields man has been charged with supplying drugs that killed a Westmoreland County man.
State police filed charges Tuesday in Westmoreland County against Matthew S. Steinbook, 41, including felony counts of death by drug delivery, drug sales and criminal use of a phone, as well as misdemeanor drug possession related to the death of a 40-year-old Sewickley Township man in 2020.
Following his arraignment Tuesday by District Judge Charles Christner, Steinbook was released on $50,000 unsecured bond.
According to police, Todd A. Shaak was found Dec. 26, 2020, unresponsive in his bedroom, where he would later be declared dead by the county coroner.
Police said they found a text conversation on Shaak’s phone with a contact listing Steinbook.
“I left you a Christmas gift under the purple candle in the bathroom,” said the alleged text from Steinbook. “I left two of the John Deere bags. They’re the ones you liked from the other day.”
Police said when they searched Shaak’s bathroom, they found multiple empty stamp bags with the brand name “Al Capone” on them. Police said they found the same brand-named stamp bags, as well as some brand-named “John Deere,” when they searched Steinbook’s home in Irwin on Dec. 27, 2020.
Police said Jan. 14, 2021, the toxicology report revealed fentanyl and acetyl fentanyl was in Shaak’s system at the time of his death. Police said on July 26, 2021, they received medical determination in the case from Dr. Cyril H. Wecht.
“Wecht states in his personal opinion, expressed with a high degree of medical certainty, the victim’s death was directly and causally related to fentanyl and acetyl fentanyl toxicity,” police said.
Steinbook is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing July 11 before Christner.
