Charges of sexual assault with 2 minors move to court
EVANS CITY — Neither one of two young girls were asked to testify during a pair of preliminary hearings Tuesday against a Cranberry Township man accused of sexual misconduct against both.
Accompanied by his parents, Tyler “Ciggy” I. Wright, 21, appeared before District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz, who would later bind all charges against Wright in both cases.
Wright’s cumulative charges across both cases include two felony counts of unlawful contact with a minor and singular felony counts of involuntary deviate sexual assault, statutory sexual assault and corruption of minors. He is also charged with two misdemeanor counts each of giving alcohol to minors and indecent assault.
Assistant District Attorney David Beichner announced early in both proceedings that the defense would allow the police officers to speak on behalf of both accusers, despite the testimony containing all hearsay.
Ordinarily, prosecutors can submit some hearsay during a preliminary hearing to back the charges presented, as long as they have more direct evidence to coincide with it.
By making the stipulation, defense attorney John Haller and Wright agreed to let the girls skip testifying at the preliminary hearing. Haller said he does expect them to testify before a jury in county court.
“It was my intent that these officers can relay what the victims say,” Haller said.
The testimony of both officers mirrored the charging documents they filed.
Zelienople officer Brett Myers said he investigated a report he received April 28, alleging Wright knowingly had sex with a 14-year-old girl. Myers said Wright was at the girl’s home because he was friends with another member of the family.
“It was (Wright’s) 21st birthday,” Myers said.
Myers said Wright later admitted to the sexual encounter.
In the second case, Zelienople Sgt. Sean Adomaitis testified to a second interview with Wright which directly followed the one conducted by Myers.
Adomaitis said his department had been investigating a second report accusing Wright of having sex with another girl, who was 13.
He said during the interview and the investigation, officers uncovered that Wright had not had sex with the 13-year-old but did touch her inappropriately in the back of his vehicle.
“She started screaming for him to stop and drive her home,” Adomaitis said.
Adomaitis said Wright drove the girl to a gas station, where another person took her home.
Haller made no arguments following testimony in both cases. He also declined to comment following the hearings.
Wright is scheduled to appear for formal arraignment July 26 in Butler Common Pleas Court.
