Karns City man cites homemade brakes as crash culprit
A 19-year-old Karns City man blamed homemade brake pads that led to a crash, after which he tried to ram a state police cruiser, according to troopers.
Police arrested Dalton L.F. McGrady shortly after 4:11 a.m. Tuesday when he crashed his car along West Sunbury Road in Center Township.
In his affidavit, the investigating officer said McGrady told him his vehicle has “wooden homemade brake pads” that caused him to hit a guardrail.
McGrady was arraigned Tuesday before District Judge Lewis Stoughton on charges including two felony counts of aggravated assault by vehicle and one felony count of criminal mischief, as well as misdemeanor counts of DUI, reckless endangerment and possessing drug paraphernalia.
McGrady remains in Butler County Prison in lieu of $5,000 bond.
Police said they spotted McGrady's vehicle leaving the parking lot of Sheetz in Center Township. Police said they knew McGrady did not have a driver's license and tried to follow him.
"McGrady was (driving) at speeds greater than 100 mph; therefore, a traffic stop was not immediately initiated," police said.
Police said they continued in the direction they believed McGrady's vehicle took and found it stopped on West Sunbury Road near Rennick Road.
Troopers activated their emergency lights and were almost at a stop directly behind McGrady’s vehicle when McGrady “put his vehicle in reverse and accelerated backward directly in front of the marked patrol unit."
During his arraignment Tuesday, McGrady said he was not trying to drive at the troopers, but was trying to move his vehicle further off the side of the road.
Police said they also found various pieces of paraphernalia for marijuana in the vehicle.
"McGrady stated that he was going 130 mph in the fifth gear at the time of impact," police said. "McGrady also admitted to recent marijuana use."
McGrady is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing June 21 before Stoughton.
