PITTSBURGH — A Butler man accused of stealing more than $40,000 from West View Bank while serving as an executive at the institution pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement on Monday.

Keith A. Simpson, 59, entered the guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Cathy Bissoon, admitting that he embezzled $41,806.90 from West View Savings Bank between 2014 and 2016, while serving as the bank’s chief accounting officer.

Simpson was charged in February, according to online court documents, after an investigation by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Assistant U.S. Attorney David Lew, who prosecuted the case, said Simpson used internal account holding funds and accounts payable funds to siphon money from the bank into his personal accounts.

Simpson also involved other bank employees in some of the transfers to get around local controls, which prosecutors say prohibited him from transferring the funds into the accounts himself.

Simpson will be sentenced on Dec. 6, according to online court documents. Prosecutors say he faces a maximum of 30 years in prison, a fine of $1 million, or both.

An attorney for Simpson declined to comment Tuesday morning.
