Sarver Automotive and Butler County Team 300 work to pull a pickup truck from a pond in Summit Township on Sunday. No injures were reported.

SUMMIT TWP — Emergency responders rushed to the scene of a reported vehicle into a pond Sunday morning, only to find a pickup truck and no people around.

The call to a pond on Bonniebrook Road owned by Summit Academy came in around 9 a.m.

After searching the area, state police got in touch with the truck's owner, Mike Barber of Summit Township, who told them he had left the truck there after getting it stuck at about 1 a.m.

Barber said Sunday morning that he and a couple friends parked in the lot and were going to walk over to the pavilion on the other side of the pond, when he pulled too far forward and the front wheels of his GMC Sierra broke through the ice. He tried, in vain, to get the truck out by putting it in reverse.

The ice on the pond was pretty thick, but not thick enough, Barber said.

“You can walk on it no problem, but you can't drive a 10,000 pound truck onto it,” he said.

No one was injured, but he was unable to move the truck and decided to come back in the morning, not counting on a passer-by seeing the truck and calling 911.

Barber said he appreciated the emergency response, because someone could have been trapped or drowning.

After about two hours Sunday morning, two tow trucks from Sarver Automotive managed to get the vehicle free.

The truck, which has a lift kit raising the engine about 9 inches higher off the ground, suffered minimal damage as the engine did not get wet.

State police said Barber faces a traffic citation, and a hefty tow bill, for the incident, though nothing criminal was suspected.

Butler County Team 300, the Herman Fire Department and East Butler EMS also assisted on the call.
