Peter Uram
Peter Uram, 83, of Butler died Sunday morning at Butler Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Akron, Ohio, April 28, 1929, and was a son of the late Peter J. and Anna Yancho Uram.
Peter retired as a congressional aide to former Congressman Joe Kolter, which he did following more than 33 years of service in the U.S. Army. He entered active duty in 1947 when the Butler National Guard unit was activated during the Korean War and received a commission as a second lieutenant in 1953. He was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College and many other Army schools. He retired in 1980 as a lieutenant colonel in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard as commander of the 2nd Battalion, 110th Infantry.
He served on six Congressmen's Military Academy Selection Committees, usually as the chairman, and arranged for the funding and approval of the new Army National Guard Armory in Butler. He also organized and started the National Guard Heritage Room that is there and named in his honor.
He was a past commander of the American Legion Post 778 in Lyndora and he obtained the 22 acres that the new post home was built on. He also located and arranged to get the tank that is at its entrance and for the helicopter that is part of the “Wings of Peace” memorial of the Penn Township Veterans Club at the Butler County Airport.
He was a member of the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Butler, was a founding sponsor of the National Army Museum, a member of the Retired Officers Association and a life member of the Association of the United States Army and Military Officers Association of America. He was a member of Penn Township Veterans Club, the Butler Cubs A.S.A. and the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association.
URAM — Friends of Peter Uram, who died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, will be received at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler from 6 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Trinity Presbyterian Church, 107 Staley Ave., Butler. The Rev. Richard Rowe, pastor, will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Butler County Memorial Park.A memorial service will be conducted by the Honor Guard of the American Legion Post 249 and the American Legion Post 778 at 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.Information also is available at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
