Holocaust survivor to speak at SRU

SLIPPERY ROCK — Arlette Levy Baker, a Holocaust survivor, will speak at Slippery Rock University’s annual Holocaust Remembrance Program at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Smith Student Center.

The Holocaust, which took place in the early 1940s in Europe, is also known as the Shoah. It resulted in the genocide of Jews, killed by the Nazis and their collaborators. The killings were carried out mainly in Germany and Poland.

Baker will detail her life as a child in Nazi-controlled France.

The German authorities came to the family home to arrest then 4-year-old Arlette Baker and her Jewish parents, Fernand Levy and Renee Pappo Levy, in December 1942.

Arlette Baker’s father negotiated her release and her stepgrandmother, a non-Jew who had married her widowed Jewish grandfather, raised her throughout the occupation of France and afterward.

Eliott Baker, executive director of SRU’s Office of Academic Records and Summer School, is Arlette Baker nephew.
