It was an especially long night Tuesday for first-responders serving on the front line of Butler's opioid crisis.

“It was quite the flurry of overdoses last night,” said Capt. Kevin McAfee of the Butler Fire Department.

There were six apparent opioid-related overdoses in less than a nine-hour span in the city. Four of those ODs happened in less than two hours.

No one died. All but one of the victims — ranging in age between 22 and 39 — were revived with Narcan, the anti-opiate medication that has become a cutting edge defense in the local war on drugs.

Separate from those cases in the city, a 28-year-old Oakland Township woman also suffered an overdose Tuesday night at her home.

The first of the calls to the county's 911 center came in at 3:19 p.m. for a man down and out on the ground at a home on the 300 block of Eau Claire Street near Reo Street.

Emergency crews noticed the contraband that had fallen out of the man's pockets. Five empty stamp bags of suspected heroin, said Butler police Deputy Chief David Adam.

The man, later identified as 27-year-old Cody T. Pyle of Chicora, was unresponsive but breathing. Butler Ambulance Service medics administered Narcan, which awakened Pyle.

He refused further medical treatment.

At 6:07 p.m., a 911 caller reported that a 25-year-old man had overdosed on North McKean Street at St. Paul Roman Catholic Church.

But by the time responders got there, the man had fled, Adam said. Police checked the area but could not find him.

A 34-year-old woman suffered a suspected OD about 6:40 p.m. at a home on the 300 block of West Penn Street.

She was not conscious and not breathing, McAfee said, “but she had a pulse.”

Firefighters opened the woman's airway and used a bag valve mask to breathe for her. They gave her one dose of Narcan and a Butler ambulance crew gave her a second dose.

But when she came to, she declined any additional help. Adam said a police report was incomplete and the woman's name was unavailable.

Barely an hour later, a 7:49 p.m. call came in for a man — 39-year-old Daniel B. Martin — who authorities believe succumbed to an overdose at his home on the 400 block of North Chestnut Street.

An Allegheny County woman told police that she found Martin unconscious on the floor. She claimed she did not know what happened, Adam said.

Firefighters performed rescue breathing and used a bag-valve mask to establish an airway for the victim. He awakened, Adam said, but denied any drug use.

Police found no drug contraband. Martin was taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital.

Within minutes, first-responders were back at it, this time at an apartment on Roosevelt Boulevard, where an initial call reported a possible burglary in progress.

But when police got there, Adam said, they found Matthew G. Hibbard, 22, who has no known address, unresponsive in the home.

He was revived with a hit of Narcan and admitted using one stamp bag of heroin, according to police. He refused further treatment.

The night's last suspected overdose call came in just before midnight at an apartment on the 300 block of Virginia Avenue where Joelle Lees, 34, lives.

A 32-year-old man was performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Lees when police and rescuers arrived. Adam said he did not know the relationship between the man and victim.

She was unconscious on the living room floor. Two children, ages 9 and 7 months, were also in the apartment. A police report did not indicate if Lees is the mother of the children.

Lees got a dose of Narcan and regained consciousness. She acknowledged snorting a bag of heroin, She, too, refused hospital treatment.

Adam said a ChildLine report was made and Butler County Children & Youth Services officials were notified.

The father of the 9-year-old girl later arrived and picked up his daughter.

All the cases, police said, are still under investigation.

State police, too, are investigating an apparent overdose about 10:50 p.m. Tuesday at a home on Route 68 in Oakland Township.

A report was not completed by Wednesday afternoon and the 28-year-old woman's name was not available. She was reportedly taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital.
