Police arrested a Zelienople man when they found heroin stamp bags in the car he was driving.

Gary Summerill, who was driving his son’s car, is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and three counts of driving under the influence after police pulled him over in May and found him with a plastic pipe and 12 heroin stamp bags strewn about the driver’s side of the car.

His preliminary arraignment was at the end of July.

Adams Township Police Officer Jason Giallorenzo pulled Summerill over on Route 228 due to an expired license and noticed the driver’s eyes seemed constricted. He also found out that Summerill had an arrest warrant out for him in Westmoreland County.

Summerill was arrested while police Sgt. Edward Lenz searched the car.

“While completing my search of Summerill, Sgt. Lenz noticed a stamp bag of heroin on the driver seat,” said Giallorenzo. “When questioned about the stamp bag, Summerill stated that it was not his.”

Police ultimately found 12 stamp bags of heroin on the driver’s seat and in the driver’s door compartment. Summerill also was found to have a “plastic snorting pipe” which was allegedly used for ingesting heroin.

A prescribed bottle of Doxycycline was also in the car.

Police took Summerill to UPMC for a chemical blood test, though upon arrival he changed his mind and refused the test. Police then took him to the Adams Township Police Department.

At the department, a drug recognition expert found him to be under the influence of “a combination of substances.”

His formal arraignment is Sept. 11. He will face charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, three counts of DUI and operating a vehicle that was not covered by financial responsibility. Possession of controlled substance charges were withdrawn.
