Fire damages home; 3 dogs rescued
SLIPPERY ROCK TWP — Three dogs were rescued and a house was damaged by a fire Monday afternoon on Bradman Estates Trail.
The fire started sometime around 3 p.m. and was first spotted by a crew of roofing contractors who were working on a house nearby.
They ran over to neighbor Diana Dreyer who was mowing her lawn and she called 911.
“They should get credit. They are the heroes,” Dreyer said.
The residents, the Goodwyn family, were not home when the fire broke out, though their three dogs were.
The roofers and some neighbors managed to get a back door open and get two of the family's three dogs out of the house and to safety.
When the homeowners arrived, they told firefighters that they also have a Yorkshire terrier, Champ, that was not accounted for. Firefighters promptly found the dog in an upstairs bedroom and brought him outside.
Though the dog seemed to be OK, paramedics from Slippery Rock Ambulance service gave Champ some oxygen and a neighbor brought it a bowl of water.
Herb and Linda Goodwyn said they were thankful that their neighbors and the roofing crew were able to lend a hand with the dogs and get the fire department responding in a timely manner.
“It could've been a lot worse,” Herb Goodwyn said.
The house sustained an unknown amount of fire damage in a partially-below ground two-car garage. The entire house had smoke damage and firefighters stayed on scene for about two hours to make sure the fire was out and the smoke was cleared.
Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Team was assisted at the scene by the West Sunbury, Harrisville and Unionville fire departments in Butler County, and Pine Township in Mercer County.
