James Westerman
James Henry Westerman, 93, formerly of Butler, died Feb. 7, 2022, at his residence in Richmond, Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley Henry Westerman and Marie Helen Stein Westerman; and a sister, Marilyn Westerman Barner of Lubbock, Texas.
He was a graduate of Butler Senior High School Class of January 1946.
He was employed for several years as City of Butler sanitarian and health laboratory technician before entering college.
In 1952, he volunteered for the Korean War, and took basic training at Fort Eustis, Va. He entered the NCO Leadership Academy, and was awarded the American Spirit Honor Medal upon graduation. He stayed on at the academy for the duration of his enlistment, receiving meritorious promotions to corporal and sergeant. Attending Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, he received the degree of bachelor of science.
Westerman's fraternities were Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Alpha Phi Omega and Vigil Honor Order of the Arrow. Westerman joined the Boy Scouts of America in 1941, and served on the summer camp staff of the Moraine Trails Council Camp Bucoco for nine seasons. He was in the 192nd National Training School for professional Scout leaders at Schiff Scout Reservation.
He was a professional Scout leader for 35 years, serving councils in Sharon, West Chester and Pittsburgh, all in Pennsylvania, and in Wilmington, Del. He had retired from the Greater Boston Council, Massachusetts, in June 1991.
Westerman is survived by his nephew, Matthew Curtis Barner of Abilene, Texas; and several cousins.
WESTERMAN — Per the family’s request, there will be no public visitation for James Henry Westerman, who died Monday, Feb. 7, 2022.
A private burial will be in the family plot at the Butler County Memorial Park, Evans City Road, Butler.
Arrangements have been entrusted to THOMPSON-MILLER FUNERAL HOME, 124 E. North St., Butler.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Westerman's favorite charities, the Salvation Army, 313 W. Cunningham Street, Butler, PA 16001, and Smile Train, 633 Third Avenue, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10017.
