On Thursday, we learned about students from Ryan Gloyer Middle School in the Seneca Valley School District who participated in a municipality community service project Wednesday, May 31, in Cranberry Township.

Mike Manipole, chairman of the township supervisors, said seventh-grade students, teachers and staff met with public services in the township to complete a variety of projects.

“We try to prepare our students for when they leave school by establishing relationships that can lead to future careers and also teach children about what life is like in certain careers,” Manipole said. “So what we try to do is pair each group of students up with different departments throughout the township.”

Volunteering is an important part of a student’s years in grade school. It builds a solid work ethic while teaching them to give back to their respective communities.

It also forges a better generation of individuals who understand the importance of thinking beyond themselves.

It’s important to learn the lessons engaging in these efforts teaches them. Some students go their entire careers never exposed to volunteer work or anything beyond the classroom, which only does them a disservice.

Building a community like the one we have in Butler County starts from the ground up, or, in this case, childhood and adolescence. Making sure students make healthy connections early can only help them in the long run.

We commend everyone, especially the students involved, on their efforts and work this past Wednesday.
