Butler woman sentenced to prison for shooting incident

A 24-year-old Butler woman was sentenced Thursday to serve 9 to 18 months in the county jail for firing a gun at a man on the porch of his Butler home in October 2021.

Xzavia Marie Adams’ sentence ordered by county Common Pleas Court Judge Timothy McCune included a concurrent 12 months of probation, and a concurrent six months of probation in an unrelated case.

Adams pleaded guilty to a felony charge of aggravated assault that Butler City police filed following the Oct. 9, 2021 incident on Eau Claire Street, and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct filed by Butler Township police following a July 24, 2021 incident.

She pleaded guilty to the aggravated assault charge without a plea agreement in place, and her attorney Jeffrey Weinberg asked for a sentence of house arrest with electronic monitoring. He said Adams is employed and is the sole supporter of a young child.

He conceded that Adams acted “egregiously stupid” in the Oct. 9 incident, and said her guilty plea saved the cost of a trial.

Adams apologized for her actions, and said she had a problem with alcohol that she got help with. She said she wanted to continue to care for her child.

McCune said she should have kept that in mind before she acted “extremely careless with a handgun.” He said she is fortunate that she isn’t facing a first-degree murder charge. He ordered her to report to Butler County Prison in two weeks.

According to testimony from her preliminary hearing in February this year, an Eau Claire Street resident Allen Christie said he was awakened in the early morning hours by an apparent argument in the parking lot of the Eau Claire Street Cafe.

He said he yelled out his window for them to quiet down, and then went to his front porch. He said he argued with three men, who had then exited a vehicle. He said he didn’t notice Adams until she reached into the car.

“She came out from the back of the car and shot at me,” Christie said. “They drove away screaming.”

Christie said the words the group used as the vehicle sped off made him feel that the shot was fired intentionally. He said he believed Adams was the shooter even though the lighting was poor.

“I saw her as she was firing the gun,” Christie said. “She did not say anything, actually.”

Butler police Lt. David Villoti testified that he obtained a search warrant for Adams’ apartment after he identified her as the suspect, and found one of the two 9 mm pistols she owns inside the apartment.

Villoti said he then arrested Adams in relation to the shooting, after which police found a 9 mm shell casing and one live 9 mm round on the ground. He said Adams had a concealed carry permit, and she told him she acted in self-defense.
