Cranberry Township man sentenced to prison in sexual assault case
A Cranberry Township man was given consecutive prison sentences Thursday in Common Pleas Court after he plead guilty to felony charges stemming from a 2020 sexual assault case involving a juvenile female victim.
Andrew Duty, 53, was sentenced to 12 to 24 months in state prison after pleading guilty to charges of photographs depicting a sex act and a consecutive nine to 18 months after pleading guilty to corruption of minors.
Duty was found not to be a sexually violent predator, but his conviction makes him a sexual offender under state law, said Benjamin Simon, assistant district attorney.
Judge Timothy McCune said Duty’s conviction makes him a Tier 2 sexual offender under Megan’s Law, requiring him to register with state police for 25 years.
Public defender Joseph Smith asked for a sentence of house arrest. He said Duty has no history of criminal charges, served in the military and worked until the time of the incident.
Three people, including the victim, submitted a written victim impact statements. The victim didn’t attend the sentencing hearing.
In March 2020, Cranberry Township police charged Duty with felony charges of aggravated indecent assault, photographs depicting a sex act, corruption of minors and sexual extortion, and a misdemeanor charge of indecent assault.
Police said Duty, on various occasions between April and November 2020, would turn off Wi-Fi in his house and request sexual favors from the 14-year-old victim in exchange for restoring the internet. He would also tell the victim he possessed “blackmail” he could use against her, according to an affidavit. Duty also took lewd photographs of the girl, police said.
