Jailed man sees 2 preliminary hearings in 1 day
CHICORA — On top of his injuries from taking a bullet to the back of the leg on June 14, an East Brady man faces additional setbacks.
Travis R. Duttine, 29, housed in the Butler County Prison for the past five months, will have charges of possession of a firearm and carrying a loaded weapon moved forward to the county Common Pleas court.
District Judge Lewis Stoughton in Chicora heard testimony Tuesday during a preliminary hearing on the case, which was Duttine’s second that day.
Duttine pleaded not guilty to the illegal possession and carrying charges.
State trooper Mohamed Miloua testified that he arrived at a home on East Main Street in Eau Claire after being dispatched to investigate a man yelling for help.
Miloua said he found a large amount of blood in the kitchen, living room, outside and about 100 feet down the driveway.
Miloua also testified he found a black 9mm handgun beside the sink and Duttine, at the residence alone, being treated in an ambulance for a gunshot wound to his right leg.
Duttine was charged after an interview by another trooper about 30 minutes later at Butler Memorial Hospital. Duttine, as a felon, is not permitted to possess a firearm.
Miloua testified the gun was registered to Jessica Custer, who was Duttine’s girlfriend at the time of the incident.
Duttine’s attorney, Rebecca Black, asked Miloua if any forensic testing was completed to determine if the bullet — which remains in Duttine’s leg — came from the 9mm he recovered in the kitchen.
“There was one gun in the house,” Miloua replied.
Custer and Duttine, earlier on Tuesday morning, had felony counts of theft and unauthorized use of a vehicle moved forward to county court.
Duttine has a list of charges and convictions dating to 2014, including theft, forgery and aggravated assault. He is currently imprisoned over a case filed against him in May involving misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief, child endangerment, and drug and paraphernalia possession.
