New Castle man charged with attempted homicide following shooting
A New Castle man is in the Lawrence County Jail facing charges, including attempted homicide. Police allege he shot his girlfriend’s mother’s boyfriend Sunday in the home they all shared.
Branden Rogers, 27, was charged with attempted homicide and a felony count of aggravated assault, and is being held in jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.
According to a complaint filed by New Castle police, Rogers claimed he shot Brent Potter after Potter charged toward him just before midnight. Potter underwent surgery Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio. His condition is not known.
Rogers told police that he entered Potter’s room to talk to him, but Potter charged at him as if he intended to tackle him. Rogers said he drew his handgun and shot Potter while he was charging at him, according to the complaint.
“He charged at me, and I fired my firearm,” Rogers told police, according to the complaint.
Police said they found two spent shell casings in the bedroom and two bullet holes in the wall.
Rogers unloaded the gun after the shooting and put it in a dresser drawer in his room, where he waited for police to arrive and where police said they found the weapon, according to the complaint. A .40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun, a magazine and one live bullet were recovered from the dresser, police said.
Police said the gun is registered to Rogers, and he has a concealed carry permit.
The day before the shooting, Rogers said Potter yelled at his 2-year-old son, and he told Potter not to yell at him, according to the complaint.
