North Catholic beats Mars, 4-1
North Catholic’s doubles tandems of Justin Kontul/Ken Cancavan and Justin Siket/Tim von Preussen were both winners as the Trojans upended Mars, 4-1, in a WPIAL Class 2A team boys tennis semifinal Monday at Pine-Richland High School.
Nicolas Scheller and Alex Garvey won for North in singles play. Mars’ lone win came from Luke Raymundo at No. 2 singles.
North Catholic will face defending champion Quaker Valley, a 5-0 winner over Central Valley, for the championship Wednesday at Washington & Jefferson College.
Mars jumped out to a fast start, plating four runs in its half of the first inning, and cruised to a 6-2 non-section victory over Knoch.
Taylor Schmitt and Mayson Kennedy both had singles and picked up a pair of RBIs in the win. In the circle, Alyssa Harris went the distance, allowing one earned run. She threw 50 of her 65 offerings for strikes.
The Planets close the season with a 7-11 record while Knoch falls
to 7-9.

Boys Volleyball
Butler dropped a 3-0 decision at home to District 10 power Meadville.
Cam Ray tallied 14 assists and Max Gianneski six kills for the Golden Tornado, who lost by scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-19.
Tyler Figlioli added 12 digs for Butler (7-7).
Girls Lacrosse
Becca Allison’s five scores paced Butler to a 15-4 victory over Shaler.
Sydney Spack added three goals and Evelynn Vissari two in the win.
Alana Collins, Khloe Huba, Vanessa Drohan, Delaney Brown and Piper Geibel each found the net once. Goalie Lauren LeGrand had nine saves.
