George Nauman
George Christian Nauman, 82, of Evans City passed away peacefully Saturday, March 12.
He was born to Charles Frederick Nauman and Esther Johanna Maier in Pittsburgh’s Northside.
Though he only went to Pittsburgh Public School through ninth grade, by necessity, no one ever questioned his ability to solve a problem that he faced throughout his lifetime or questioned his desires to achieve his goals. By the age of 13, he was managing his own paper route with the Pittsburgh Post and continued that until he met the love of his life, Rita Mae.
After painting houses to earn extra money, he finally joined the Heat and Frost Insulators Local 2 in 1965. He would work in the union for the next 32 years, spending the bulk of his career at the Shippingport Atomic Power Station in Beaver County, Pa. He was known for his skilled craftsmanship and his desire to teach others the trade.
Though he was a dedicated union worker, nothing was more important to him than his family. You would see him at dance recitals with his daughter, Joyce. He was very supportive of the athletic endeavors of his son, Christian. Whether it be cheering him on during an event or always willing to help him practice improving his performance. At home, the double-decker treehouse that George built had carpeting, electricity and a 40-foot slide off the second story that was the envy of every child in the neighborhood. This family involvement continued with his six grandsons, Luke, Tanner, Nathan, Gabriel, Clayton and Ethan. He was “Pappy George” to them, and no one loved watching their grandchildren play sports more, rarely missing an event. Away from the sporting fields, every one of them got to experience Pappy George’s infamous tractor rides around his property.
George’s other love was his chocolate lab, Ripken. They went everywhere together, even church. Ripken would always wait patiently in the car for services to be over. An avid sports fan, he was a Steelers season ticket holder pre-Three Rivers Stadium, and every Sunday there was no doubt what was on his agenda. Later, this passion continued with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Regardless of what night of the week the game was on, you could guarantee there would be two TVs on is his living room — one for Rita Mae and one for the Penguins game.
Until the end, his partner and love of his life for 62 years, Rita Mae, was always his primary focus. Their mutual love for each other was seen through to the end of his life, Rita Mae never leaving his side. Dementia and physical ailments limited his activity later in life, but his love for Rita Mae and his family never wavered.
George is survived by his wife, Rita Mae (Vietmeier); his brother, Charles Nauman of Allison Park; his children, Joyce Master (Butch) of Butler and Christian Nauman (Jenny) of Sewickley; his six grandsons, Luke Master (Trisha Lynn) of Reading, Pa., Tanner Master (Samantha Bachman) of Butler, and Nathan, Gabriel, Clayton and Ethan; his two great-granddaughters, Madison and Ellie; and his great-grandson, Noah.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his sister, Joan Pace of Pittsburgh in 2012.
