David Dougherty
David Bruce Dougherty, beloved partner, son, brother and uncle, entered Paradise on Friday, March 4, 2022, after an extended stay and valiant fight at Penn Hospital in Philadelphia. David underwent a heart transplant on Dec. 18. He courageously fought to recover, but God had other plans for him. He passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
David was born on Nov. 21,1963, to Ray and Loretta Dougherty in Butler. David, with his gentle, loving spirit seemed to be loved by all those around him. In 2003, he met Dennis Jack, who would become his devoted partner until his last breath. David and Dennis savored days spent at the beach, swimming in the ocean and taking in the sun. They also enjoyed long bike rides and cooking delicious gourmet meals together. Their dog, Brutal, held a special place in David’s heart. David was immensely loved by his parents, siblings, nieces and nephews. He was deeply loved by the members of the Hill United Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon. Throughout both of David’s long-term stays at Penn, he won over the hearts of the nurses, doctors and surgeons caring for him with his optimism, his will to fight, his perseverance, his smiles and winks.
David worked at Penn United until retiring three years ago. He spent much of his free time delving into his numerous and varied hobbies which included: stained-glass making, sewing, gardening, soap making, cooking, reading, and flea marketing. At a younger age, his interests included making his own yogurt, cultivating a fish pond in an old bathtub and caring for his own bee colonies. David also used his free time to help others. He served as president of the Butler chapter of Habitat for Humanity. At the Hill Church, David offered his time and assistance in a variety of ways that increased the church’s outreach and programs. He drove shut-ins to and from church, volunteered with Vacation Bible School and helped with lighting and design with the youth Musical and Arts Camp. In his role as camp counselor, he worked alongside youth during a mission trip in New England. David looked out for his elderly neighbors, often visiting with them and bringing them his homemade baked goods. David reminisced about the past and had the ability to recall the finest details or memories that others had long lost track of.
His loved ones have true admiration for his fight and will relish in the cherished memories shared with David.
David was predeceased by his brother, Todd Dougherty; and sister, Jennifer Bayuzik.
