Township looks at bids for traffic signal upgrades
The Butler Township commissioners opened bids at their Monday night meeting for a project that would upgrade traffic signals in the township.
“It's a pretty good face-lift for most of the traffic signals in the township,” said township manager Tom Knights.
The township received three bids for the project.
Bronder Technical Services of Prospect submitted the lowest bid at $363,046.37, followed by M & B Services of Clarion at $384,000 and Traffic Control & Engineering of Bentleyville, Pa., at $394,425.20.
Knights suggested tabling the item, so the commissioners could deliberate.
The commissioners obliged in a 4-0 vote, minus Commissioner Sam Zurzolo, who is still recovering from an accident on his farm.
Funding for the project is coming from the Green Light-Go Grant.
Through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the program helps to fund projects involving the operation and maintenance of traffic signals along critical and designated corridors on state highways.
According to a map on PennDOT's website, the grant could go toward signals on major roadways within the township, including Routes 8, 356, 68 and 422, among other slightly smaller corridors.
Knights said these upgrades include battery backups and other mechanical upgrades that would make the signals stronger, more secure and more efficient.
He said the township applied for the grant in 2017, but multiple PennDOT initiatives forced it to revise the project and the application.
“We have our project in place now,” he said.
The Butler Township board of commissioners meets again March 9.
