Cranberry moves to change sign rules

CRANBERRY TWP — Supervisors are looking to fix a township ordinance to permit nonresidential development identification signage.

According to a legal ad, supervisors will hold a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. July 25 to consider changes to the zoning portion of the township code.

The move comes after the township revised its sign ordinance a few years ago, according to Ron Henshaw, director of planning and development services for the township.

During that process, which saw a complete rewrite of the document, a mistake was made in not adding nonresidential development signs to the list of permitted items.

He said a recent development sought to place a sign on the property, which prompted officials to recognize the mistake.

The signs in question include “everything and anything,” Henshaw said, including signs on buildings advertising businesses, free-standing signs for shopping plazas, banners, billboards and monument-style signs for office parks. The ordinance lays out guidelines for installing those signs, including lighting regulations and setback requirements.

A similar ordinance exists for residential subdivision signs for housing plans, and Henshaw said the changes to the ordinance will make the two entries similar.

“There really is not a lot of difference,” he said.

The ordinance change also calls for the repeal of all prior, inconsistent ordinances, the legal ad states.

Supervisors would consider a vote to adopt the changes during their Aug. 1 meeting.
