A Franklin Township man is accused of cutting two fingers off another man’s left hand with a Japanese sword on Labor Day, according to state police.

Brandon Michael Caruso, 22, was charged Tuesday, Sept. 8, with two felony counts of aggravated assault and one misdemeanor count each of reckless endangerment, simple assault, controlled substance possession, drug paraphernalia possession and marijuana possession following the alleged incident on Ridge Road.

Police said they were dispatched to a residence around 11:30 a.m. for a man with his fingers cut off by a katana, or Japanese sword. Police found the man with two fingers cut off on his left hand. A tourniquet was applied at the scene, according to Butler County Emergency Services dispatch recordings.

Butler Ambulance Service took the man to the nearby Mt. Chestnut Nazarene Center, and LifeFlight flew him to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. The man had to be intubated, police said.

Caruso had left the scene by the time police arrived. He was tracked and apprehended on Chipmunk Road in Connoquenessing Township.

Caruso told police the incident began after the other man had slammed a door and approached him with a raised fist. Caruso said he attempted to use the sword to create distance between himself and the man, which was when he struck the man’s hand.

Police searched the home and found a katana with blood on it, cocaine, a marijuana plant and related paraphernalia.

Caruso is being held in Butler County Prison on $75,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sept. 16 before District Judge Joseph Nash.
