BUTLER TWP — Township officials on Monday said an expensive project to address a stormwater overflow problem on Arlington Avenue will begin next summer.

Steve Bresnehan, a township resident and landlord, told the commissioners about flooding that has been going on for five years in the yard of a rental property he owns. Also, runoff from a storm last week destroyed the driveway.

He had discussed the problem with commissioners in June and on Monday asked them for an update on their plans.

Manager Tom Knights said a 36-inch stormwater pipe and some connected 15-inch storm sewer lines will have to be replaced.

“It's a very, very, very expensive project,” solicitor Rebecca Black said.

The township should have bids from contractors by next spring and work should begin in early summer, officials said.

In unrelated business, the commissioners agreed to send a police officer to Street Smart Cop/Pro-Active Patrol Tactics training for criminal and narcotics interdiction at the Shafton Volunteer Fire Department in North Huntingdon on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at a cost of $199.

Commissioners approved sending another officer to a Point Blank Shield Instructor course for ballistic shield deployment and gun training at the Allegheny County Police Training Academy in North Park on July 22 and 23 at no cost to the township except for the officer's travel expenses.

In other business, the commissioners awarded a road seal coating contract to Suit-Kote of Cortland, N.Y. for $87,801. No other contractors submitted bids.

The commissioners also appointed PFM Asset Management as the financial adviser to the nonuniform employee pension plan.
