March 26 — Ashley M. McCarthy, 27, of Penn Township was charged with forging a check for $220 and cashing it at the First Commonwealth Bank branch on North Main Street.
Police said their case began March 14 following a call from Saxonburg police, who conducted their own forgery investigation that led to McCarthy’s arrest. She is charged in Saxonburg with two counts each of forgery and theft by deception.
[naviga:h3]Butler Township Police[/naviga:h3]
Friday — Police charged two Allegheny County men in connection with a shoplifting incident last month at the Butler Commons’ Walmart.
The defendants — James P. Consolaro, 36, and David G. Hoover, 34, both of Springdale — are accused of trying to make off with $1,474 in merchandise. Police said the pair managed to get away with items valued at $412.74.
Consolaro and Hoover are both charged with felony counts of retail theft and conspiracy.

6:33 a.m. Sunday — One person was hurt when two sport utility vehicles collided on Route 228 east at Saxonburg Boulevard. Stacie L. Long, 33, of Cheswick, Allegheny County, one of the drivers, was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with a minor injury. Police cited the other driver, Austin J. Farinelli, 19, of Adrian, Armstrong County, with disobeying traffic control devices.
Sunday — Police said they are investigating last week’s theft of a license plate from a vehicle at a home of Spring Valley Road in Connoquenessing Township. The vehicle also was apparently vandalized.
5:07 p.m. Saturday — A 58-year-old woman, who police did not identify, was caught allegedly shoplifting $456.50 in clothing at the Clearview Mall JC Penney store in Center Township. Retail theft charges are pending.
8:09 a.m. Saturday — No one was injured when a car caught fire in Summit Township. Police said the driver, Matthew J. Segedi, 46, of New Castle, reported his 2008 Dodge Avenger lost power while southbound on Stutz Road. The car’s engine compartment then ignited.
7:09 a.m. Saturday — Robert L. Smith, 29, of Butler allegedly fled the scene of a one-vehicle crash in Fairview Township. Police later issued him six traffic tickets. Smith was traveling east on Hooker Road when he lost control of his car and struck a ditch just east of Haysville Road.
He was cited for failing to immediately notify police of an accident, abandoning a vehicle on a highway, trespass by vehicle, driving too fast for conditions, disregarding traffic lanes and littering.
March 27 — Benjamin S. Abbott, 18, of Clay Township was arrested on charges he used at least one of his mother’s debit cards to make multiple fraudulent transactions in February totaling $1,091.54.
Police said Abbott admitted that he took the cards and later withdrew money from an automated teller machine without the victim’s permission. Abbott was arraigned on a felony count of access device fraud and a misdemeanor count of theft by unlawful taking. He was placed in the Butler County Prison on $2,500 bail.
