Nov. 7 — Tanner A. Steele, 26, of Center Township was charged with having marijuana and other drug contraband in connection with a traffic stop last month on Route 8 near Glade Mill Road.

Police said they stopped Steele’s car for speeding. The vehicle also had a smashed windshield.

An officer reported smelling marijuana coming from the car, according to court documents. The defendant subsequently handed over a marijuana pipe from a pants pocket and marijuana that was in one of his boots, police said.

A vehicle search turned up a pill bottle that had marijuana residue in it and a vape pen with suspected THC in it. The items, police said, were in a gym bag that was on the back seat.

Matthew R. Smiley, 29, of Burgettstown is accused of passing the check for $4,117.83 on May 18. The check, police said, was written on a bank account that did not have sufficient funds.

The company on Sept. 19 sent the defendant a certified letter seeking payment. But the latter was returned as unclaimed.

Thursday — Robert A. Schafer, 29, of Butler was arraigned on charges he was found with 20 bags of suspected heroin and gave a bogus name to a task force officer following a traffic stop Nov. 9 in the 200 block of West New Castle Street.

The task force was conducting surveillance of possible drug activity on West Jefferson Street about 10 p.m. when officers stopped a car for a faulty tail light, according to court documents.

When Schafer, a passenger, was taken out of the vehicle, officers said they found the bags of suspected heroin on the floor where he was seated.

The name he subsequently gave officers could not be found, documents said. At the Butler police station, the task force used a portable fingerprint scanner to learn his true identity.

Officers also learned that he was wanted on unrelated arrest warrants by Butler Township police and by Washington County authorities, documents said. He was placed in the Butler County Prison

Schafer was eventually arraigned on charges of possession of a controlled substance and false identification to law enforcement authorities. Bail was set at $5,000 in the case.
