10:39 p.m. Aug. 23 — Christopher J. Harris, 38, of Slippery Rock was caught with drug contraband after a traffic stop on Walker Avenue near Brugh Avenue.
A patrol officer initially spotted Harris’ pickup truck stopped in front of a home in the 400 block of South Washington St., which police described as a “high drug activity area,” according to court documents.
The truck eventually left and the officer followed it. The officer learned the vehicle’s registration was expired and stopped the pickup.
Police said a search of the truck turned up seven used syringes, three empty stamp bags commonly used to package heroin, two metal spoons and a crack pipe.
Harris is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and driving an unregistered vehicle.
[naviga:h3]Slippery Rock University Police[/naviga:h3]
Tuesday — Zachary R. Taylor, 17, of Fenelton was charged with drunken driving stemming from an Aug. 19 traffic stop in the area of Kiester and Stores roads. Police said they stopped him about 2:40 a.m. because his car had a faulty brake light.
Taylor admitted he had “two beers,” according to court documents, and a portable breath test device confirmed he had alcohol in his system. Field sobriety testing indicated he was impaired.
A formal breath test at the police station showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.09 percent. In Pennsylvania, drivers under 21 are considered to be intoxicated with a blood-alcohol level of 0.02 percent or higher. The legal limit for adult drivers is 0.08 percent.
Taylor is charged with driving under the influence, DUI by a minor, minors prohibited from driving with any alcohol in their system, underage drinking and a lighting violation.
[naviga:h3]State Police, Butler[/naviga:h3]
Thursday — Police announced they are investigating a reported theft and assault about 10 a.m. Aug. 15 on New Castle Road in Franklin Township.
A 29-year-old man told police that an unknown suspect hit him several times and stole multiple items. Investigators said the victim had a visible injury.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 724-284-8100.
Tuesday — Brandyn L. Gutauskas, 25, of Slippery Rock was found with medication without a prescription after police picked him up on an arrest warrant in Brady Township.
Police said they searched Gutauskas and found seven Suboxone strips in his wallet. He did not have a prescription for the narcotic medication used to treat opiate addiction.
The arrest warrant, court records showed, was issued in connection with a shoplifting incident May 21 in Slippery Rock.
He was arraigned in both cases on a misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance and a felony charge of retail theft. He was placed in Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail following arraignment.
Sunday — Craig E. Cyphert, 47, of Franklin Township was charged with having crack cocaine and other drug contraband stemming from a January traffic stop in Butler.
Police said they stopped Cyphert about 1:20 p.m. Jan. 7 on North McKean Street near Ritts Park Drive after they noticed his expired inspection sticker. He subsequently let police search his car, according to court documents.
The search turned up a small container that had suspected crack, a pill and pill cutter, three straws with white residue and two crack pipes in it, police said.
Cyphert is charged with misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
Aug. 24 — Police charged a staff member at Summit Academy with assaulting a student at the reform school in Summit Township in August. The defendant, James P. Haney, 35, of Beaver Falls, Beaver County, is accused of grabbing a boy by the neck and throwing him into a table and chairs Aug. 8.
Haney also allegedly placed his body weight on top of the youth, who police did not identify, and dug his fist into the alleged victim’s chest.
Police said their investigation began Aug. 13 when they learned of the suspected case of child abuse. Other staff members who witnessed the incident, according to court documents, told police that the boy “showed no aggression toward the defendant” before the incident.
Haney is charged with simple assault and harassment.
Aug. 24 — Shawn P. Johnston, 25, of Evans City was charged with being more than twice the state’s legal limit for alcohol stemming from an August traffic stop in Summit Township.
Police said they stopped Johnston about 12:25 a.m. Aug. 18 for having no rear lighting on his car in the area of Route 38 and Route 68. He admitted that he had been drinking alcohol before driving, according to court documents.
He subsequently failed field sobriety tests and was taken for a breath test that showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.171 percent. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.
Johnston is charged with driving under the influence, careless driving and a lighting violation.
Aug. 22 — A burglar made off with $400 in currency from a 75-year-old woman’s home on Sunbury Fields Lane in Center Township. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
Aug. 15 — An unknown thief stole the hood doors from a Caterpillar bulldozer on Mars Evans City Road in Forward Township. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
