Tuesday — George A. Ashbaugh, 56, of Butler was charged with being more than three times the state’s legal limit for alcohol after police were called June 6 for an intoxicated man inside a convenience store on West Jefferson Street.

Police got there and found Ashbaugh backing up in a car. The defendant nearly backed into an officer’s cruiser, police said, before he stopped.

When the officer asked if he had been drinking, Ashbaugh said that he “only weighs 125 pounds and it doesn’t take many beers to get him drunk,” according to court documents.

Police said that when the suspect got out of his car he fell over, forcing the officer to catch him. He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test that showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.250 percent. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.

Ashbaugh is charged with driving under the influence.

6:59 p.m. Tuesday — An unknown hit-and-run driver struck a pickup truck on Winfield Road in Winfield Township. The suspect’s car is described as a black, two-door Dodge Charger, which could have damage to its driver’s side.

Police said prior to the crash the car passed the truck from behind and then stopped in front of the truck, driven by Rodger A. Sell, 70, of Cabot. Sell, in turn, passed the car. “This happened several more times,” according to a police report.

The car eventually struck the pickup while passing it on the left.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 724-284-8100.

Monday — Howard L. White, 66, of Butler was charged with leading police on two brief chases in connection with the same traffic stop last month in Oakland Township.

Police said they initially spotted the defendant about 10 p.m. May 30 weaving in his pickup truck on Route 38. A trooper pulled him over just past the Spillway bar. But before the officer could get out of his unmarked police car, the defendant drove away, according to court documents.

The trooper, with the car’s emergency lights and siren activated, followed the truck north on Route 38 for about one mile when White’s pickup nearly struck a guardrail just north of Randy and Bob’s Carstar.

He subsequently pulled over again, documents said, on Route 38 near Greece City flats. The trooper this time was able to get out of his car before the defendant accelerated northbound.

Police resumed their pursuit, with a second trooper taking over as lead chase vehicle just north of Valley Road. The pursuit lasted about one mile before White pulled over into a small dirt parking lot on Hooker Road.

White is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, disregarding traffic lanes, failing to use his turn signs, careless driving, reckless driving and not wearing a seat belt.

June 21 — Police charged a Westmoreland County man with drunken driving stemming from a traffic stop earlier this month in Summit Township.

The defendant, Kevin L. Whitlock, 56, of Ligonier, was stopped about 8 p.m. June 12, according to court documents, after police saw his pickup swerve over the white fog line and double-yellow center lines on Bonniebrook Road near Headland Road.

Police took Whitlock to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test following field sobriety tests and after a portable breath device indicated he had alcohol in his system.
