SLIPPERY ROCK — After reviewing 57 applications for the presidency at Slippery Rock University, the Presidential Search Committee has narrowed the list of candidates down to 10, according to university officials.

Jeff Smith, SRU trustee and search committee chairman, said the committee would meet with the 10 candidates for off-site interviews in the coming days. Based on those interviews a smaller group of candidates — four or five — would be invited to campus for formal interviews the week of Feb. 12.

“The committee had a very challenging job culling the more than 50 applicants down to the 10 they selected to interview because there were so many good candidates,” Smith said. “However, I think they did a great job with those they have selected. It is a dynamic and diverse group that will be interviewed.”

[naviga:h3]Black History Month back to its ‘Roots’ at SRU[/naviga:h3]

SLIPPERY ROCK — The university will host its Black History Month events with a theme centered around the TV miniseries “Roots.”

The university first recognized Black History Week in 1970, before it became a monthlong celebration in 1983.

This year the SRU Office of Inclusive Excellence is organizing the February 2018 celebration around the theme “Empowered From Our Roots.” “Roots” reached an estimated 140 million people in its debut in 1977, according to Nielsen Media Research.

“It made TV history; that’s really hard when it’s about such a brutal message,” said Melissa Ford, assistant professor of history at SRU.
