BUTLER TWP — An Oakland Township woman faces a hearing next month on charges she fabricated a story about an attempted purse snatching at the Point Plaza.

Butler Township Police last week charged 30-year-old Ashley M. Frenchak, 30, with unsworn falsification to authorities and making false reports, both misdemeanors.

Police said they were called about 9 a.m. Dec. 14 to the back of the shopping plaza near the Sweeper City store where Frenchak claimed two males — one white and one black — tried to grab her purse while she was in a minivan.

She reported that she “hit the gas” and drove away.

While an officer spoke to the defendant, according to court documents, a detective searched the area for the supposed would-be robbers or any other evidence.

Police, in wake of the report, issued a be-on-the-lookout advisory for other police departments.

It apparently didn't take long, however, for police to grow suspicious of Frenchak, documents said, due to “inconsistencies” in her story.

She eventually admitted that she lied.

She told investigators that a man, who she identified, “owed her nearly $200 from previously ripping her off money during a drug buy,” according to a police affidavit.

Frenchak said the man contacted her and apologized, and offered to pay her back. She agreed to meet him at Point Plaza.

The man, she recounted, got out of a vehicle with another man, who she knew by a first name, and both approached her car and tried to steal her purse.

She said she kept her purse, got out of her car and ran to the back of the Rite Aid store. Both men left moments later.

Frenchak's preliminary hearing is set Feb. 22
