PROSPECT — The igloo has fallen.

The igloo that stood across the street from the Prospect Corner Store collapsed Wednesday night, according to its creator, Aaron Eilenfeldt of Main Street.

Eilenfeldt used his landscaping experience to build an igloo Monday in his yard with some help from his friend, Austin Maire, who also lives along Main Street.

“I like being outside,” Eilenfeldt said. “Just having the snow, it just makes me want to get out and do something.”

The igloo measured over 8 feet tall, according to Eilenfeldt.

He had a trick for packing the blocks.

“I used a 12-gallon (cooler), and I stuffed them down,” he said.

The 50 blocks measured 2-feet in length and 1-foot wide and 1-foot high, and the pair placed the blocks in a hexagon. Eilenfeldt said he was hoping the igloo would hold until the weekend, when more snow and cold temperatures are expected.

The igloo drew the interest of passers-by and those visiting the store across the street, where Eilenfeldt works at one of his two jobs.

Earlier in the day, store manager Kathi Monpere of Connoquenessing said Eilenfeldt put a lot of effort into the igloo and people took notice.

“He's been out there working on it ever since,” she said. “It's turned out pretty awesome.”

Monpere said most customers thought of it as a pleasant surprise.

“We've had customers in and out of the store, stopping and taking a picture of it,” she said. “They haven't seen anything like that in a long time.”

Eilenfeldt said people have approached him to tell them they liked the structure too.

“It does give me a sense of pride,” he said. “I feel pretty good about it.”

He said he is not ruling out a new igloo, but it will depend on the weather.

“If there's a substantial amount of (snow) accumulation then I might try to rebuild,” Eilenfeldt said.
