A Butler man pleaded guilty to assault in county court on Monday, after being charged with causing a crash that injured another person.

Domenic M. DeAngelo, 21, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor simple assault and recklessly endangering another person, as well as summary failure to stop and give information or render aid, before Judge William Shaffer.

The plea agreement calls for a sentence of two years of probation, fines, restitution and court costs. DeAngelo is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 25.

DeAngelo was initially charged with felony aggravated assault by vehicle and several summary traffic violations after an incident on Route 8 in Center Township on Sept. 27, 2015.

The assault and endangerment charges were later added, and the remaining charges will be dismissed as part of the plea.

State police said DeAngelo purposely ran a vehicle driven by Heather N. Brinker, 22, of Slippery Rock off the road as she attempted to pass him just north of Mercer Road around 4:15 a.m. Sept. 27, 2015, according to court documents.

Brinker, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from her car after it hit an embankment and rolled over. She was flown by medical helicopter from the scene to UPMC Presbyterian hospital, where she underwent several surgeries for her injuries, police said.

A witness reported that the two drivers knew each other, and that DeAngelo chased Brinker's car after she left the Clearview Mall parking lot that morning.

Brinker told police that DeAngelo attempted to hit her vehicle shortly after she left the mall, prompting her to pull off into a parking lot, and when she re-entered the road, DeAngelo was in front of her, continuing to hit his brakes to force her to stop, according to documents.

When Brinker tried to pass DeAngelo, he drove into her lane and forced her car off the road into an embankment.

DeAngelo then drove off, police said.

When interviewed by police the next day, DeAngelo said Brinker was trying to pass him when he “drifted into the opposite lane” and jammed on his brakes. He said he continued driving after the accident.

Police did not say why DeAngelo was trying to force Brinker's vehicle to stop.
