SAXONBURG — The South Butler School Board agreed Wednesday to vote next week on a resolution to not raise any school taxes above the 3 percent state index for the 2018-19 school year.

Board members unanimously voted at Wednesday’s committee meeting to place the resolution on the agenda for the Jan. 10 regular meeting.

The school district would have to request permission from the state Department of Education to raise taxes above the 3-percent index set by the state, Matthew Cimbala, board president, said after the meeting.

He said it is too early to say how the 2018-19 budget is shaping up, but an audit report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2017, from the Maher Duessel accounting firm at next week’s meeting should give the board a better understanding of the district finances, he said.

A 3-percent real estate tax increase would raise the tax rate by 2.89 mills, said Paul Slomer Jr., business affairs director. He said a mill generates $165,000 in revenue for the district.

In a personnel matter, the board agreed to hire Jeff Schnur, a retired Butler School District principal, as acting assistant principal at Knoch High School effective Jan. 8 at $325 a day.

He held the same position after Kaitlin Remensky resigned to accept a job in another district in September and was retained until Michael Barlak was hired for he job in October.

However, Barlak accepted a job in another district before starting at South Butler.

Schnur will remain in the position until a new assistant principal is hired.

In unrelated business, the board agreed to let the Butler County Special Olympics use the high school and middle school on Jan. 14 to host a floor hockey tournament.
