A woman charged with stealing a man's car and fleeing the state will continue to be held in Butler County Prison pending the outcome of her case, after her bond modification was denied county court on Wednesday.

President Judge Thomas Doerr denied the modification request for Karen E. Pfeiler, 32, who is currently held in the county jail on $2,500 after being charged with felony theft and receiving stolen property.

The charges stem from an incident on Nov. 6, where Cranberry Township police say Pfeiler stole a man's car, wallet and phone as he was helping her move from Indiana to Maryland.

According to Assistant District Attorney Mark Lope, Pfeiler was apprehended in Maryland and extradited back to Pennsylvania. However her attorney, public defender Joseph Smith said Pfeiler voluntarily turned herself in.

She was initially held on $25,000 bail, which was later reduced.

Smith asked for the bond reduction, stating that the charges occurred during a domestic incident in Cranberry as Pfeiler and a man were heading to Maryland, and she left the man at the hotel.

Lope contradicted that explanation, saying the bond was not unreasonable because Pfeiler has no ties to the community and was in the process of moving from Indiana to Maryland at the time.

He said the incident occurred at the Red Roof Inn on Route 19 in Cranberry Township.

Police said the vehicle's owner, a man from Columbus City, Ind., reported that he was helping Pfeiler move her belongings to a home of a friend in Dundalk, Md., when after driving for 10 hours they stopped at the hotel for the night.

When he awoke that morning, he found his 2014 Chevrolet Cruze, a wallet with $350 in cash and six credit cards, and phone valued at $650 missing. Pfeiler was nowhere to be found, the man told police.

Using a location app on the phone, police tracked it at 6:30 a.m. that day near Somerset and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Pfeiler was later arrested and extradited. She is scheduled for formal arraignment on Jan. 9.
