BUTLER TWP — Fred Vero was sworn in as a new commissioner and Commissioner Dave Zarnick was re-elected board president at Tuesday’s reorganization meeting.

“I’m looking forward to the next four years,” said Vero, who was elected in November.

He thanked the commissioners and staff for helping him prepare for his new role.

Commissioner Sam Zurzolo, who was re-elected last year, was sworn in and elected board vice president.

Butler County President Judge Thomas Doerr administered the oath of office to the newly elected officials.

Commissioners reappointed Ed Kirkwood as township manager, Cheryl McNeill as assistant township manager, Theresa Giesler as township secretary, Marcie Love as treasurer and the firm of Lutz and Pawk Attorneys at Law as solicitor.

In new business, Kirkwood said Fire Marshal Larry Christy, a former Butler fire chief, will retire in the spring after 10 years on the job.

Christy’s last day of employment will be May 5.

The township will advertise the job opening through the end of January, hire a replacement by the end of February and the new marshal will start on March 1, Kirkwood said.

The new marshal’s starting salary hasn’t been determined and will be based on his interview, qualifications and experience, Kirkwood said.

Christy’s current annual salary is $62,000 and the new marshal could receive the same pay if he or she has equal qualifications and experience, Kirkwood said.

He described Christy, who also performed commercial building inspections, as diligent and a good teacher, and said he is respected across the state.

Christy has obtained a Hodge Fund grant every year he applied for it including this year, Kirkwood said.

The grant provides up to three smoke detectors or two smoke detectors and a carbon monoxide detector for any township resident.

In addition, commissioners approved permanent employment status for police Patrolman Jason Gueck effective Tuesday, when he will complete his one-year probationary period.
