Washington Township, Lawrence County — A birthday party went south at a home on Thursday, when a Volant man stabbed two people, police said.

State police in New Castle said the incident occurred in the 400 block of Coopertown Road, Volant, at 1:15 a.m.

Aaron Caldwell, 23, of Volant, is being held in the Lawrence County Prison on $5,000 cash bail after being charged with two counts each of felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor simple assault, as well as misdemeanor recklessly endangering another person and two counts of summary harassment.

Police said Aaron Caldwell got into an argument with Eric Caldwell, 23, also of Volant, over threats to harm himself.

During the argument a third person, Jesse Ray, 20, also of Volant, attempted to restrain Aaron Caldwell to de-escalate the situation, but Aaron Caldwell pulled a pocket knife out of his pants and stabbed Ray in the calf.

He then stabbed Eric Caldwell in the midsection, police said.

Multiple people were at the home for a birthday party, police said.

Ray was taken to Grove City Medical Center and was treated and released. Eric Caldwell is being treated at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, police said.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 4.
