The damage done along the path of Sullivan Run by the July 5 flooding in the West End is tentatively set to be fixed next spring.

City council voted unanimously at Thursday's council meeting to approve an agreement between the city and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin the Sullivan Run Local Flood Protection Project.

“It's a good thing for the city, because it's going to help repair the damage done by the flood,” said councilwoman Kathy Kline.

Kline, who also is the director of public safety, added that the project could prevent further flooding.

The estimated cost of the project is $20,000, and the city would be responsible for 20 percent, or $4,000.

The agreement allows for the city to use work in kind for a portion of the city's cost. The work in kind would be that done by the city to repair erosion and other damage following the flood.

The flood protection project is not in place of the state Department of Environmental Protection's flood control project.

Phase 2 of the flood control project consists of widening the bridges on Brady, Penn and Miller streets, as well as removing Sullivan Run's downstream culverts.

The flood control project is schedule to be done by spring of 2018.
