PLAIN GROVE TWP, Lawrence County — The state police fire marshal is investigating an early Tuesday morning blaze that destroyed a vacant mobile home about one mile west of the Butler County line, authorities said.

No one was injured but damage was estimated at between $100,000 and $150,000.

The fire was reported about 1:10 a.m. on Arthur Road near Pollock Store Road in Plain Grove Township.

Firefighters from the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department in Butler County were first to arrive.

“There was heavy fire to the mobile home,” said Ryan Hanchosky, Slippery Rock VFD's assistant chief.

Neighbors told fire officials the home had been unoccupied for the past year. Authorities said they were also told that the home had recently been broken into.

It appeared the blaze started in the rear of the large trailer home.

“We did not send in an attack crew,” Hanchosky said, “because the fire was too far gone.”

The home's metal roof eventually caved in, making it difficult to extinguish lingering hot spots.

About 40 firefighters battled the blaze. In addition to the Slippery Rock VFD, assisting departments were from Scott, Slippery Rock and Neshannock townships and Volant in Lawrence County, and Springfield Township in Mercer County.

The fire marshal could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.
