BONNEVILLE, UTAH — Rob Freyvogel completed his first run Wednesday at Speed Week, but it wasn't without more technical difficulties.

Freyvogel of Butler Township worked with his crew to fix body and mechanical damage to the Carbiliner following a rough run early in 69th annual Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

The Carbiliner went 334 mph and completed its run, but its exhaust system collapsed during the race.

Freyvogel and his team are working on the issue and expect to race again Thursday.

“We're trying our hardest here, and we're not seeing results,” Freyvogel said. “It's getting very frustrating.”

He said their struggles are a combination of slippery and rough track conditions, as well as he and his crew “not executing well.”

However, the previous issue with the vehicle's suspension did not recur, and Freyvogel and his team remain optimistic.

“Really, anything can happen,” he said. “We can still achieve all our goals. We only need two good passes to set the (Double AA/Blown Fuel Streamliner class) record or one really fast pass to get the Hot Rod Trophy.”

The trophy is awarded to the racer with the best overall time during Speed Week. Racers have to have consecutive record times to set a record. The Double AA/Blown Fuel Streamliner class record is 417 mph.

Freyvogel and his crew were paid a visit Wednesday by Craig Breedlove, a five-time world land speed record holder who was the first racer to set records exceeding 400, 500 and 600 mph. The Carbiliner was modeled after Breedlove's vehicle. The Carbiliner is 28 feet long, weighs 3,000 pounds and has a 2,600 horsepower engine.

“We just talked about the design of the car, and the stability, and how he thinks it's still the optimal design,” Freyvogel said.

Despite the team's struggles, Freyvogel said they still are having fun.

“The camaraderie is second to none (to) anywhere else in any kind of racing,” he said. “We're all pulling for each other to go as fast as we can.”
