CRANBERRY TWP — Police say they still have not identified two of three men suspected in a marijuana rip-off last week during which a man was shot.

The alleged shooter, Kahlil Tavarus Shelton, 23, of Duquesne, Allegheny County, remains behind bars but he's reportedly not talking.

A felon, he faces a list of charges with the top count being attempted homicide.

Investigators are hoping traditional police techniques will lead to the arrest of Shelton's alleged accomplices — sooner rather than later.

“We have to do more interviews with the victim and witnesses,” Cranberry police Sgt. Chuck Mascellino said Monday. “Hopefully, we'll garner more information to identify the suspects.”

Mascellino did not immediately know the condition of the victim, a 29-year-old Westmoreland County man, or if police have spoken to him yet.

The man, who police did not identify, was shot about 7:20 p.m. Aug. 7 in the right arm and torso at a house he was visiting on Marshall Road.

He underwent surgery the following day at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh for a severed brachial artery — the major blood vessel of the upper arm.

Police are being tight-lipped about their investigation.

“We're being cautious with the information we've released,'' Mascellino said, “because we have unknown suspects still at large and for the protection of the other involved parties.”

According to charging documents, Shelton and his accomplices, who weren't from Butler County, were at the house “negotiating the purchase of a large amount of marijuana for $2,500 to $15,000.”

Authorities estimated the marijuana to be between 1 and 6 pounds.

Along with the suspects and victim, also in the house were two other men, who police in court documents only identified as “witness #1” and “witness #2,” and a 6-year-old boy.

Mascellino said one witness was living at the rental home at the time. The other witness, from Westmoreland County, accompanied the victim.

Once Shelton got there, police said, he went to the bathroom. When he came out, he was holding a pistol, and fired a single shot into the floor of the kitchen, where the suspected drug deal was playing out.

The boy and one of the witnesses were in the living room watching television.

In the kitchen, documents said, Shelton held the gun in the faces of the victim and the other witness. One of the unknown suspects opened a back pack, which the witness saw contained a handgun.

That same suspect “began stealing approximately one pound of marijuana,” according to a police affidavit, “that was on the kitchen counter.”

About the same time, the victim ran toward the front door in a bid to get away. Shelton fired a shot that struck the victim in the right arm, police said. The slug passed through his arm and entered the side of his body.

Shelton subsequently held his gun in the face of the witness who had been in the living room while the boy ran into a bedroom and hid.

All three suspects eventually ran out of the house and drove away in a silver car. They made off with at least a pound of marijuana.

Authorities said that when police got there they smelled a strong odor of marijuana.

Casings and slugs from the spent rounds and “some evidence of drugs” were also recovered, Mascellino said. He would not elaborate.

He also declined to say how investigators identified Shelton, who was arrested about 1:30 p.m. Aug. 8 in McKeesport, Allegheny County.

Shelton was later arraigned on felony charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, robbery, illegal possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm without a concealed carry license, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and criminal use of a communication facility.

Additionally, he was arraigned on misdemeanor charges of simple assault, reckless endangerment, and terroristic threats.

Shelton's criminal record shows he was convicted in 2012 in Allegheny County Court on separate charges of felons not to possess firearms. He was sentenced to 3½ to seven years in state prison.
