A 70-year-old Fenelton man, charged with offering money for a sexual encounter with a 17-year-old boy, entered a guilty plea in Butler County Court on Monday.

Gary L. Shay pleaded guilty to misdemeanor corruption of minors before county Judge William Shaffer and is scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 7.

The plea agreement calls for a sentence of the county Intermediate Punishment Program, with the terms to be set by the court, and the first 90 days on electronic monitoring.

State police allege that on May 16, 2016, Shay offered a then 17-year-old boy $20 for a sexual act in Fairview Township.

Police said Shay continued to offer money to the boy after his consistent refusals, increasing the amount each time.

After the boy declined $100, Shay allegedly reached under a blanket the boy had over him, but the boy shoved Shay's hand away. Shay then asked the boy not to tell anyone what had happened, according to court documents.

Police said Shay admitted to the crime in an interview on July 8.

He was initially charged with felony promoting the prostitution of a minor, misdemeanor endangering the welfare of children and corruption of minors.

Shay was arraigned and released on $25,000 unsecured bail.
