Water gushes from a broken main under Elm Street between East Brady and East Penn streets Thursday afternoon. A representative of Pennsylvania American Water said a 10-inch cast iron water main broke, leaving about 50 customers without service while crews worked to repair the water line.

For the second time this year, Elm Street saw water cascade down its curbs, this time between East Brady and East Walnut streets.

Bruce Bryner Jr. of Butler said he was traveling east on Brady Street when he came upon the scene. He said at around 3:30 p.m. Thursday the street swelled and broke apart, giving way to the water.

Pennsylvania American Water responded to the scene, where they found that a 10-inch cast iron water main had burst, according to Gary Lobaugh, external affairs manager for the water company. He said the main was more than 70 years old.

Lobaugh said 50 customers would be without service for the day, but they should return to service at midnight. He said water would be available at the repair site for customers.

The water flowed down to the corner, where in March the same main broke flooding both Elm and Locust streets.

“When a piece of old main like that starts to go, different pieces start to break off,” Lobaugh said.

Lobaugh said the company would study the breaks to determine what to do with the line.

“Once we have several breaks on a main, it becomes a candidate for replacement,” Lobaugh said.
